One of the things that I have learned about effective teaching strategies is that you don’t have to include every teaching strategy into a lesson. You just have to use the ones that fit the best and when you have an opportunity to include another one you do. Sometimes I have felt like I was trying to shoehorn a strategy into a lesson and when I did it never really worked out that well.
Integrating the Internet into our work in this class helped me to see how cloud computing works in real life. I loved to ability to work together on assignments with my classmates, although there were times where it was difficult to communicate with them. We were all on different schedules and I am one that likes to have a little discussion before I get started so I can make sure that we are on the right page. Our group was able to do that a little, but not as much as I would have liked. My wonderful group members did a great job with taking initiative and starting things up. This gave me a clear definition of task and allowed me to do my work and help out in other places when needed.
The assignment that I think exemplifies good teaching with technology is the SIG annotated lest of resources. I love looking up new things on the internet and learning more about those things that I am interested in. This assignment will help me with teaching this year because I don’t usually have time during the year to discover new things. I usually make my lessons with things that I already know. Doing this this summer has enabled me to do the work ahead of time. I think that my students will appreciate this.
I think that I have done a great job meeting my goals in this class. I have learned about many different cloud computing sites like photoshop.com, prezi.com, and animoto.com to name but a few. My goal was to increase my skill in using these technologies so I could use them with my classes. Because of the work I did in this class I will now be able to do so. I also learned that I don’t have to have total mastery of these sites in order to be able to use them. My students and I can learn them together, and that’s okay. Using these sites and others I can help my students to see how technology can help them with their work, and their lives. When I model how easy it is I know that I will be able to hook my students and give them a greater appreciation for technology.
Do I have new goals? I think that I would be remiss if I did not have any new goals. One of my new goals is to continue what I have been doing this summer. I am always going to be on the lookout for new sites and resources. I don’t have much time during the school year to explore them when I find them, but I can bookmark them and make comments on why I liked the site and how I think it can be helpful to my teaching. That way when I have a chance to go back to it I won’t forget why I bookmarked it in the first place. My long term goal is to keep making projects that incorporate these new technologies and not be afraid to get my nose dirty. I want to use my iPhone to do more things with the class to continue to show them how new technologies can improve their lives and help them to be lifelong learners.
